The Efficacy of Trimethoprim in Wound Healing of Patients with Epidermolysis Bullosa: A Randomized, Double Blinded, Placebo-controlled, Cross-over Pilot Study

Elena Pope, MD, Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, ON

Epidermolysis bullosa is a hereditary disease that is characterized by bullae formation after minor trauma or friction. Currently there is no cure for this devastating disease. Patients with this condition experience blister and bullae formation throughout their lives. We have observed that the use of antibiotics that have anti-inflammatory properties seems to be of value in decreasing the blister or bullae formation and in promoting healing of chronic wounds these patients develop. This trial will compare the effect of trimethoprim vs placebo in patients with epidermolysis bullosa. Each patient will act as their own control and we will be able to observe and compare changes while patients complete a two month period of either placebo or the antibiotic. We will also monitor changes in quality of life, emergence of resistant bacteria, number of infections developing during the trial and family's or patient's perception of wounds.
