The 2007 CDF Research Grants recipients were announced at the CDA Annual Conference in Toronto in June. New this year is the Benefactor Life Members’ CDF Research Grant. This new Research Grant has been named in honour of the CDF Benefactor Life Members and recognizes their support of the CDF.
This year’s Research Grant awards also included the second BiogenIdec-CDF Colin Ramsay Endowment Fund Research Grant, made available by the contribution of BiogenIdec Canada Inc of a $350,000 endowment. Astellas Pharma Canada Inc. fulfilled its commitment to provide the final instalment of $175,000 this year to bring the endowment to a total of $525,000. The endowment fund name will change to reflect Astellas’ ongoing support for the CDF, and the funds will continue to work for us. The CDF offers our sincere thanks to both companies.

In 1991, the late Dr. Zoltan Fekete initiated the Dr. Frederick Kalz Fund with a generous gift to the Canadian Dermatology Foundation. Numerous colleagues and friends of Dr. Kalz (1906-1993) contributed further to this fund.
The purpose of the fund is "to commemorate the name, life, work and teaching of Dr. Frederick Kalz through bursaries or scholarships for Dermatology training". It is assumed that the applying trainees will be driven by curiosity and a strong desire to learn or to take part in a learning experience. Activities undertaken primarily to acquire financial gains or skills to produce income do not qualify. Endorsement of the application by a senior faculty member of a Canadian university is required. Updated application forms and guidelines are posted on the CDF website (www.cdf.ca). Recent recipients of Dr. Frederick Kalz Bursaries will be mentioned in the AGM Minutes 2007.
