Well-known Winnipeg Dermatologist Dr Jack Toole was honoured at a reception in his home town when he was celebrated as the Canadian Dermatology Foundation “Practitioner of the Year 2006”. Exceptionally, four pharmaceutical companies jointly sponsored the Award, which enabled the Foundation to bestow on Dr Toole the highest level of Benefactor Life Membership in the Foundation, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to dermatology and commitment to his patients in over 28 years of clinical practice and as a Professor at the University of Manitoba.
As members of the four participating companies looked on (Galderma Canada Inc., Leo Pharma Inc., L’Oréal Canada Inc., and Stiefel Canada Inc.) Dr Toole was presented with a commemorative plaque by Foundation President Dr Neil H. Shear.
Dr Marni C. Wiseman, the Winnipeg dermatologist who nominated Dr Toole for the Award, said that he was deserving of this award because “He is an exceptional clinical community dermatologist....he has delivered excellence in dermatologic care to hundreds of thousands of patients in Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario and Nunavut.” Dr Wiseman went on to say “Because of his commitment to patient care, (Dr Toole) is a Full Professor at the University of Manitoba. He is a well-known and recognized clinician to all specialists and an incredible resource for our community. He has ensured that our dermatology community remains vibrant and we are hopeful that his vision for a ‘centre of dermatology excellence’ will come to fruition in the near future.”
In support of the nomination, Dr Gilles Lauzon, Director, Division of Dermatology at the University of Alberta wrote: “To me, Jack embodies the very substance of what it means to be an altruistic physician: one forever concerned about the wellbeing of his patients...even his smile and reassuring voice are healing and therapeutic. Jack surrenders his time and energy without expectations in return. I remain in awe at the personal sacrifices still made on a daily basis, even after 28 years of unrelenting clinical service........He expects his performance to be of the highest standard, and uncompromised dedication to his roles as teacher, mentor and examiner ensures these elite standards are passsed on to succeeding generations...... Jack is a private clinical practitioner with a strong academic component, a testament to his versatility and dedication. Jack’s contributions thus extend from the past to the present and, importantly to the future.” “All those who have interacted with Jack are proud to express our gratitude by bestowing on him this honour.”
In closing, Dr Wiseman congratulated Dr Toole and declared that he deserved to be recognized for his achievements, which have made him an invaluable and important Canadian dermatologist and an example to other dermatologists.
