Doctor W. Stuart Maddin was honoured as the Canadian Dermatology Foundation Practitioner of the Year 2003 and is seen here, accompanied by his wife and daughter, when he was presented with a commemorative plaque, at the annual dinner of the Division of Dermatology at UBC which took place in Vancouver in June this year. This Award is usually funded by one pharmaceutical corporate sponsor, and bestows Life Membership in the Foundation on the recipient. But there was such an exceptional response from companies in the pharmaceutical industry wishing to honour this popular, gifted Canadian physician, and the acknowledged doyen of the dermatology community, that the Foundation was able to bestow on Doctor Maddin the highest level of Benefactor Life Membership in the Canadian Dermatology Foundation. The nomination was proposed by Dr Harvey Lui of UBC, who noted that Dr Maddin has contributed to dermatology at the national and international levels for over half a century, and still maintains a full agenda of educational and research activities. Dr Maddin served as President of the Canadian Dermatology Foundation from 1982 to 1993 when the Endowment Fund for dermatological research grants grew from less than $200,000 to over $1,500,000. Doctor Maddin, who is currently Clinical Professor Emeritus in the Division of Dermatology at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, is recognized for his leadership as a clinician, his academic achievements and his active involvement in scientific associations and organizations in Canada and around the world. An accomplished editor and well known author, he has published many scientific volumes and articles and is currently editor of the monthly Skin Therapy Letter. Not only has Dr Maddin made an extraordinary contribution to dermatology, he is the recipient of many awards, which speak to his involvement in educational media, athletics associations and other community activities. The CDF Practitioner of the Year is an annual award which was established in 1992 to honour Canadian dermatologists whose major income is produced from clinical practice and who have made a major contribution to dermatology and the community at large. Previous recipients of the award are Dr Pierre Ricard, Dr Tom Enta, Dr William Pace, Dr Don Rosenthal, Dr Bob Lester, Dr. J. Barrie Ross, Dr William N. McEachern, Dr W.
